Branding and freedom aren’t two words you usually see together in a sentence. Let me tell you a story …
I used to go to job interviews in a suit. A nondescript black or navy trouser suit that was ill-fitting in so many ways. Firstly, the anatomy I’m blessed with makes finding a flattering off-the-shelf trouser suit quite difficult. Vanity aside, there I was, a young excited professional creative, going to find a job in my field, looking like an accountant!
Somewhere along the journey into adulthood, I had picked up this idea that this is how things were done. Serious situations like job interviews called for “serious” attire and, we all know that means a suit. Despite the fact that people who already worked at these places never/rarely wore suits. Despite the fact that I was largely being judged on my creativity and, we all know how your visual presentation has the power to influence decisions. My choice of clothing just didn’t make sense.

There is such huge pressure for new beginnings in January. Reflecting on the month I’ve had, it’s been more about recalibration, in preparation for new things.
Rather than be frustrated, I’m reminding myself that, ultimately, we can start whenever we like!
For those who are working on starting (or restarting/refreshing/revamping) a business, I’m running a 3-part workshop in London, in collaboration with business coach, Danielle Anderson of Step and Stone. It’s titled, ‘Stand out from the crowd.’
The sessions will cover: identifying and crafting your unique voice; building an online presence that is in alignment with this and; leveraging the power of social media, with confidence. We want you to be able to market your business in a way that’s authentic to you, effective and fun!

I recognise that the story behind the work is often more compelling than the outcome. It’s through these stories that we understand the full context within which something exists. We get an insight into the creator’s intentions and inspirations, as well as into their process. And so a new Afri-love series is born: Project Stories. About a year ago, Dayo Forster approached my graphic design studio, Asilia, with regards to developing the visual identity for the homeware brand she was launching.
Toghal was born out of a love for textiles, African heritage and the huge diversity of pattern, form and expression found in traditional African fabrics. Co-founder Dayo wanted to take inspiration from these traditional designs and keep their heritage alive by reimagining them in a fresh, contemporary way.

I’m delighted to share this interview with Dayo Forster, Co-Founder of Toghal, a new textile-based homeware brand. Inspired by an appreciation of the legacy of Africa’s textile heritage in the world and a love of technology, Toghal is about reimagining traditional textiles to create something iconic and fresh.
The Asilia team and I have had the great pleasure of working with Dayo to bring the brand to life. It’s been a fantastic project and the kind of challenge that we thrive on: how to create a brand that is contemporary and global, while at the same time, rooted in or inspired by a particular culture. Dayo’s story indeed exemplifies the beauty of collaboration and also, the crucial importance of preparation – research, learning, planning, and partnership.
