A Summer of Pictures

African Corset Brooklyn Bridge Park NYC

Summer is a distant dream for many of us living in the northern hemisphere (climate change aside, that is – only 3 days ago I was out and about in short sleeves!). Indeed, it's now 2 months since I returned to London from my trip to a hot and humid U.S. and, I've been meaning to share the highlights since. What better timing than when I need a reminder of how good it feels to have the sun kiss my appropriately darkened skin.

My 5-week trip was a glorious respite from what has been a very challenging year, in so many ways (more on that another time).

It was a time for perspective: I find being away from your 'normal' environment great for seeing things clearer.

I saw Erzumah Ackerson,  the designer behind fashion label Bestow Elan, in her amazing Ayawa Kente coat, at the launch for Jacqueline Shaw’s Fashion Africa book. I haven’t gotten it out of my mind since! Elegant, striking, memorable.

I had to share it with you, along with other pieces from the Bestow Elan ‘Glamour Dear!!!' collection.

Africa Fashion Week London kicks off this Friday and I thought it would be fitting to dedicate this week to showcasing some exciting UK-based designers and other fashion-related things.

First up is designer Bestow Elan, who also took part in the "Africa on the Catwalk" show at Africa Utopia. I love how she experiments with shape and structure. There were so many beautiful pieces at the show of which these are just a few.

Dispatches from Africa Utopia: It’s Complicated

Africa-Utopia-Southbank-Centre-London-2012-Festival-of-the-World

"Africa is all too often written off as an intractable "problem" for the world to solve. I hope this festival will reveal just some of what Africa has to offer the rest of the world: the energy of our youth and their desire to engage with the world; the transformative potential of culture and, perhaps most potently, the power of community to bind people together."

 – Africa Utopia Co-curator, Baaba Maal

Indeed the festival's main question was, in what ways can the continent lead the way in thinking about culture, community, sustainability and ethical wealth creation? In short, what can the rest of the world learn from Africa?
