Inspired: Anthropologie Habari Dinnerware

These ‘Habari’ dinnerware sets from Anthropologie are clearly inspired by African textiles. I notice some iconic wax print motifs, as well as kanga-inspired text treatment. The vibrant collection includes coasters, plates of various sizes, mugs, coasters and napkins.

Speaking at the Oxford Africa Conference – Friday 23rd May

Oxford Africa Conference 2014

This Friday afternoon, I have the honour of speaking on a panel at Oxford University’s Oxford Africa Conference.

The topic: New Lifestyles – The Consumer Drive. The session synopsis reads:

Africa’s rising middle class presents new opportunities for retailers. Is there such a thing as an ‘African consumer’, and if so how do we reach her/him?

I’m really looking forward to discussing this, alongside Udo Okonjo (Chief igniter/CEO of Fine & Country, West Africa), Nneka Keshi (Director of Digital Marketing – Africa and Middle East Zone, L’Oreal), Didi Mae Hand (Specialist Researcher on Africa) and Jonathan Reynolds (Academic Director, OXIRM).

The Oxford Africa Conference merges Oxford University’s two most successful Africa-focused conferences (The Oxford Africa Business Conference and the Oxford University Pan-African Conference). Taking place this Friday and Saturday (23rd and 24th May), there’s a great line-up of speakers from a variety of sectors. Friday’s theme is ‘Succeeding in Times of Change’ and Saturday’s is ‘Celebrating Today’s Africa’.

Tomorrow (21st May) is the last booking date so, get your tickets now!

See you Friday.

Pins of the Week: Red, White and Pink

One of the things I love most about what I do is that I get to look for, look at and make beautiful images! Here are some that I came across this week. There was definitely a theme emerging – prints, beads and the red, pink and white palette.

Buy African: Men’s Shorts for Summer (Yevu + Laurence Airline)

I’m not sure how I feel about this menswear trend, especially the shorter and tighter the shorts get! Lus has been threatening to get some shorts to rock this summer so, in support, I’ve collated a few, from Yevu and from Laurence Airline, that I could possibly get down with. Just maybe …

Inspired: African Wedding Cakes

As much as I try to follow a mostly paleo diet, my one BIG weakness is cake. On Sunday, I was talking about how to win the battle against grains with paleo meal preparation . Today, I’m celebrating sugar, gluten and dairy with these creative African-inspired cakes!

Such is the human being – full of contradictions! In my defense, wedding and celebration cakes are special occasion indulgences. Why go for the traditional plain tiers when you can go for something more distinct and artistic for your once-in-a-lifetime event?

Enjoy!

As much as I love colour in design, black and white can be really interesting too – especially when texture and pattern come into play. Here, some furniture and home decor pieces, in black and white.

I saw Erzumah Ackerson,  the designer behind fashion label Bestow Elan, in her amazing Ayawa Kente coat, at the launch for Jacqueline Shaw’s Fashion Africa book. I haven’t gotten it out of my mind since! Elegant, striking, memorable.

I had to share it with you, along with other pieces from the Bestow Elan ‘Glamour Dear!!!' collection.
