Ways to Use Pinterest as a Creative Tool

Ways-to-Use-Pinterest-as-a-Creative-Tool

Pinterest is much more than just a place to salivate over pretty pictures. My obsession with beautiful things aside, what keeps me going back to use the social media platform, again and again, has to do with its function as a creative tool. 'Tool' you ask? Indeed! You may actually be able to justify adding Pinterest to your timesheet. Here are some ideas of how you can use the platform towards more productive ends (not that the act of seeking inspiration can't be productive – context is everything).

Planning events

You can create moodboards covering everything from decorations and the arrangement of the space through to food and the design of the invitations.

Collecting tips and tutorials

Pinning images and videos from pages where tips and tutorials are shared means that you can have them all bookmarked, in one easily accessible place, for quick reference. Who says knowledge management can't be sexy?!

Creating a portfolio

Whether for simply cataloguing your work or for showcasing it to the world. The multiplier effect of repins means that you can potentially widen your net of potential clients, customers and collaborators.

Collaborating

And speaking of collaborating, you can invite others to pin on your board and effectively crowdsource ideas in visual form.

Putting briefs together

Planning to commission some work? Working on some DIY or home improvement? Been collecting things that you like the look of? Pin them on a board and you can share them with your designer, developer, construction guy etc., with just one link (it's a good precursor to Seth Godin's tactical guide for marketers on how to create a website). If for yourself, use a board to keep track of your vision.

Good old inspiration

Last but not least, the most obvious use for Pinterest – creating boards around themes, subject matter, techniques, material, disciplines etc., that relate to your work and/or creative interests. You might even consider using boards to present visual research findings to clients as we at Asilia are starting to do.

In what ways do you use Pinterest as a creative tool or to otherwise support your work?

  1. Admiring the commitment you put into your site and detailoed information you provide. It’s nice to come across a blog every once in a while that isn’t the same unwanted rehashed material. Great read! I’ve saved your site and I’m including your RSS feedes to my Google account.
