Somalia Independence Day

The Republic of Somalia was formed 50 years ago today when the former British Somaliland and Italian Somaliland territories united.

While Somalia is often associated with conflict, piracy and the breakdown of the state, its cultural ambassadors have been busy creating alternative expressions of and insights on the nation.

Renowned novelist Nuruddin Farah cites as his mission "to keep my country alive by writing about it." Nuruddin has earned wide international acclaim for his work. Particularly famous for his trilogies, above are the novels in his Blood in the Sun series.

The Dusty Foot Philosopher, K'naan, has recently gotten a lot of airtime with his World Cup anthem but he's been dropping thought-provoking, roots-asserting tracks for years now. Below is a taste of his lyrical stylings with T.I.A.

Identical twins Ayaan and Idyl Mohallim are behind fashion brand Mataano (meaning “twins” in Somali), drawing inspiration from their cultural heritage (see images at top of post).

And a final video from Somali group Shegoband:
