Rwanda Independence Day

The Land of a Thousand Hills, Rwanda, like it's neighbour Burundi, celebrates independence today.

A few artistic highlights:

A group of visual artists, Ivuka Arts Kigali, have come together to discover and nurture young talent and to showcase Rwandan contemporary art to the world. A painting from participating artist Collin Sekajugo can be seen at the top of this post.

In the fashion arena is Keza, an organisation that works to create local businesses in Rwanda that service the international fashion industry, with social responsibility being at the forefront of this two-pronged aim.

They cite the following Chinese poem on their website:

"Go to the people. Live among them. Learn from them. Love them. Start with what you know. Build on what they have: But of the best leaders, when their task is done, the people will remark we have done it ourselves."

To end, a clip from the lady with the haunting vocals, C├ęcile Kayirebwa
